The Captain has turned off the Fasten Seat Belt sign
Prompted by a comment from the lovely dormouse, I’ve realized it’s time to resume posting “facts and other multifarious tales” on the Smidgin. I had contemplated shutting the site down, or at least letting it sit unused. But then I glanced back over my previous posts and noticed quite a few that I particularly liked.
My writings have meandered from here to there and back again. I began with an attempt at mixing the geek and mystery genres in what remkade termed “film noir geekery.” But soon I branched out in other directions, with comments on the media and an attempt to explain why I use Apple computers.
Sometimes I resorted to just posting nonsense, though I usually tried to make it amusing. At other times, however, my writing strayed in more contemplative directions, such as my thoughts about heresy.
So it would seem I have actually produced a few useful things on this blog. I’ve also come to realize that writing is good for me, whether it be a letter to a friend, reflections in a notebook, or nonsense on a blog. Indeed, this summer I have done a considerable amount of writing, just not on the blog. Now, however, it would seem time to truly revive the Smidgin after the hiatus.
Which brings me to the question of what purpose I intend for this little blogling to serve. I’m not much of one for chronicling my life, and not dedicated enough to devote the blog to one particular subject. So, if I am to have a blog, it seems it will be simply a platform for my thoughts.
The review of past posts I conducted showed me that my thoughts can be wide-ranging and fascinating, at least to me. I removed one post which mocked political letters, because, as my roommate this summer pointed out, anyone can write snarky comments. I should hope my contemplations are somewhat sophisticated, and don’t come at the expense of someone else.
So we’ll see where we go from here. Unfortunately the first few weeks back at school will be a chaos of computers and I might not won’t write much. For now, I’ll end with a reflection I had a few weeks ago and thought about putting on here:
At lunch I like to throw scraps of bread or cookie crumbs to the little sparrows in the courtyard where I eat. Usually when I throw out a piece food, one bird will pick it up and all the others will fly after him trying to steal it. It’s silly of them, because if they would just wait for me I’d give them all food. It reminded me of us and God; when God tries to give us something, we so often go running off after some other little thing when if we would only learn to be patient and wait, He has promised to give us so much more.
With that thought, I’ll end the post. Check back at the Smidgin soon for more.

Welcome back, dear sir. It is excellent to know that the Smidgin will carry on a while longer, but I must comment that your new picture is just about the saddest I’ve ever seen.
